Housing Officer

A Housing Officer helps people find somewhere to live, and helps fix problems and issues with housing - particularly local council or housing association accommodation. You could also work with tenants to fix issues with a property or issues such as safety or anti-social behaviour.

Tenants in all kinds of accommodation can find themselves in need of support with their housing arrangements and can need representation to help them deal with problems. Housing officers are professionals who support tenants in housing associations and local authority properties.

Housing Officer is also known as Housing Practitioner, Housing Support Worker.

Role Characteristics

  • Allocate houses to people in the community
  • Make sure housing is safe and well-maintained for its occupants
  • Organise repairs and maintenance on the homes

How to become

You will normally require GCSEs in English and Maths and A Levels. A degree in a housing related field like management studies, business or economics would be beneficial.  Additionally, some experience in housing, social work, and knowledge of housing legislation and practices would also be beneficial. Volunteering and work experience is valued by employers.
