Primary Care Commissioning Officer

Commissioning is the process of assessing needs, planning and prioritising, purchasing and monitoring health services, to get the best health outcomes. As a Primary Care Commissioning Officer you will work as part of the Primary Care Team supporting the management of effective commissioning to ensure the successful delivery of the delegated function requirements of primary medical services and direct commissioning. 

The process of commissioning is a continual cycle and you will be required to identify and prioritise the needs of the population of the area you work in so that services can be designed and secured to meet those needs within a defined budget.

Primary Care Commissioning Officer is also known as Commissioning Officer, Commissioning Manager, Commissioner.

Role Characteristics

  • Provide high quality project, service and administrative support for the Primary Care Commissioning work programme
  • Facilitate and monitor the progress of projects, support internal and external performance management and improvement
  • General administration of Primary Care contracts including performance and compliance and day to day contract changes
  • Complete contract compliance actions including monitoring E-declaration, participating in contract review visits and pre and post payment verification.
  • Manage elements of projects within the team; gather and analyse provider information
  • Assist with patient queries

How to become

There are many routes into Commissioning roles; these include university, apprenticeships or experience within the workplace. 

You will normally need 5 GCSEs including English, maths and sciences, or equivalent and either A-Levels or BTEC depending on your preference in learning. Although a degree is not mandatory for a Primary Care Commissioning Officer, most employers will favour this level of education.

It is important to check your preferred course provider's entry requirements for guidance.

With experience you could become a Senior Commissioning Lead, Team Leader or Manager, responsible for a Commissioning department, or a Director.
