Cleaner

Cleaners create a clean, safe, and comfortable space for people to live and work in.

You will usually work within a team and will be responsible for sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitising surfaces. You may also handle waste disposal, restock supplies, and perform tasks to ensure a tidy and organised environment. You will be a vital part of health and care services, ensuring that people are happy and comfortable in the spaces they are in. 

Cleaner is also known as Domestic Services Staff, Caretaker, Cleaning Operative & Facilities Technician.

Role Characteristics

  • Sweep, mop and dust spaces to keep them clean
  • Use spray cleaners and chemicals to sanitise spaces
  • Clean hard floors with mops or electric floor cleaners
  • Vacuum cleaners or carpet cleaners
  • Clean toilet and bathroom areas
  • Dispose of waste appropriately and in the correct bins

There are no set entry requirements for cleaners.

Employers may ask for GCSEs in English and maths, and relevant experience. 

Employers may ask for some experience in cleaning which could be from paid or voluntary work.
