Driver

A Driver working in health and care involves transporting people and supplies to various locations.

You will play a crucial role in the health and care system, ensuring timely and safe transportation for individuals in need of medical attention. You will provide travel opportunities to those who may struggle to get around on their own, taking them to and from their appointments or activities. 

Driver is also known as PTS Driver, Heathcare Driver.

Role Characteristics

  • Drive a Patient Transport Service vehicle (part of the ambulance service)
  • Drive a minibus to collect people to go to a day centre
  • Drive a van to transport supplies or documents around health and care buildings
  • Drive a mobile dental unit for a community health provider
  • Drive a NHS Blood and Transplant vehicle as part of the blood donor team.
  • Work with other health and care professionals to ensure seamless transitions in patient care

How to become

You will need to have the correct driving licence for the vehicle you'll drive.

There are no set entry requirements for this role, but good literacy and numeracy skills are expected.

Some experience of healthcare or care work may be beneficial, this could be from paid or voluntary work, or through experience you have from previous roles.

With experience you could develop into becoming a Team Leader, or train to drive other vehicles. With an interest and experience in healthcare, you could also become a Healthcare Assistant.
