How to become
The education and training are delivered by physiologists/scientist working across Leeds Teaching Hospitals trust and beyond and has pioneered physiologists/scientist training in the UK, educating physiologists/scientist who are changing patient and clinical outcomes, contributing to multi-professional working, and leading in many areas of innovation and translational research in the NHS.
Healthcare science practitioner (PTP and apprentice learners)- Undergraduate
As a healthcare science practitioner in cardiac sciences, you’ll:
- Assess patients using diagnostic equipment.
- Often provide technical reports of the tests you perform.
- Probably be based in a hospital, recently our staff work out in the community development corporation (CDC).
Cardiac Science, the day-to-day job of physiologists/scientist will vary depending on the types of procedures carried out by the hospital in which you’re working, but will usually include:
- ECG
- Ambulatory electrocardiography
- Ambulatory blood pressure measurement
- Providing technical support during angioplasty, devices implantation and follow-up.
- Exercise stress testing.
- Technical reports on the tests you perform.
Clinical scientist- Masters
If you’re a clinical scientist in cardiac sciences, you’ll: Perform tests at a more senior level.
- Considerable amount of responsibility for performing more complex tests and interpreting the results of each test
- Expected to teach and supervise other members of the team.
- Management role with responsibility for resources (such as staff, budgets, or equipment).
- Complexed rhythm management
- Electrophysiology studies
- Echocardiography included valve led clinic, transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE)stress echo and electrophysiology studies.
Entry requirements
Throughout the course, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours at university. They can be existing employees looking to develop their careers, or new applicants to the business.
Applicants must:
- be over 18.
- not be in full time education.
- have the right to abode in the UK.
- meet the course entry requirements.
GCSE (or equivalent)
GCSE (or equivalent) Maths, English and Science at Grade C, 4 or above
If you don't have this yet, you'll need to achieve this level before you take your end-point assessment.
UCAS points and college grades Plus, one of the following:
- 112 UCAS points from at least two A levels (including at least 32 points in Biology), or equivalent BTEC National qualifications (including suitable biology modules). We accept AS levels. General Studies will not be accepted.
- 96 UCAS points from three A levels (including 32 points in Biology). General Studies will not be accepted.
- Access to Higher Education Diploma from a relevant Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education -recognized Access to Higher Education course, (mainly consisting of Biology and Chemistry related modules), or an equivalent Access to Higher Education certificate. Normally we require 15 credits at level 2 and 45 at level 3 (with at least 15 level 3 credits graded at distinction level)
- Successful completion of a level 3 Healthcare Science Assistant apprenticeship
Practitioner training program – Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) BSC- Leeds University
- A-level: ABB including a science subject (Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics). Other science-based subjects will be considered.
- We consider all A-level subjects for the remaining grades, except general studies or critical thinking.
- EPQs are not considered within our scoring.
- GCSE: A minimum of 5 GCSEs grade C or above (or 4 or above) required in Maths, English Language, and Science. The School of Medicine recognises that some applicants may have studied a more flexible curriculum, where they have been able to progress through their educational development at an appropriate rate according to their ability. Where a Level 2 (for example, GCSE) or Level 3 (for example, A Level) qualification has been taken ‘early’ the academic reference should include the reasons for this so that it can be taken into consideration by the admissions team. Please note that we normally expect double-science GCSE. Candidates with only one science GCSE will only be shortlisted if admissions tutors are satisfied the academic profile meets the minimum entry criteria.
Age
Please note that applicants must be 18 years of age or over by the first day of the programme.
Scientific Training Program STP- Manchester metropolitan University or Newcastle university .
- 1st or 2:1 in either an undergraduate honors degree or an integrated master’s degree. Both options must be in a pure or applied science subject relevant to the specialty for which you are applying.
- Medical degrees are only accepted for Life and Physiological Science specialties. However, you may apply if you have a higher degree (a degree completed after a bachelor’s degree, at a more advanced level e.g. MSc) in a relevant subject for the specialty being applied to and have a 2:2 honors degree in any subject.

- Level of communication skills to undertake the role effectively and deliver safe care to patients. You must also be able to demonstrate that you can achieve the standards set for clinical scientists by Health and Care Professions Council.

There are opportunities to develop and progress in healthcare science, you can apply for vacancies in specialisation (Echocardiography Complexed Rhythm Management and Respiratory), management, research or teaching the future workforce.
Healthcare scientists/physiologist use a range of science, engineering, and technology skills to prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease.
You could also study to become a Consultant Clinical Scientist or mover into Healthcare Management. You could move into research and study for a PhD qualification and teach in higher education.
