Decontamination Operative

Decontamination Operatives are responsible for ensuring that reusable medical devices and equipment are cleaned, sterilised, and repackaged to high standards, ready to be reused in operating theatres, clinics, hospital emergency departments and other areas of health and care. 

You will work with a variety of different medical devices, using highly sophisticated and automated tools, as well as hand tools to clean equipment. As these devices will have been used before they reach the department, they may contain blood and other bodily fluids, so you will wear personal protective equipment while you are working.

Decontamination Operative is also known as Decontamination Technician, Sterile Services Technician.

Role Characteristics

  • Disassemble and reassemble of the reusable medical devices in accordance with Manufacturer’s instructions
  • Clean and sterilise equipment
  • Check that all medical equipment is working properly
  • Pack and deliver sterilised equipment to wards and departments
  • Restock supplies of items like dressings, needles, and syringes
  • Operate steam sterilising machines

How to become

There are no set entry requirements to become a Decontamination Operative, but good English and maths skills might be expected.

Gaining experience in health and care could be beneficial for you. This experience might come from volunteering, work experience, or qualifications like a BTEC or T-Level in health and care.

With further experience, you may be able to develop into a more senior position within the decontamination sciences department.
